Suicide: Another obstacle in life

Suicide is among the top 20 leading causes of death globally for all ages. Every year, nearly one million people die from suicide. Suicide is the “most common cause of death for people aged 15 – 24”. More people die from suicide than from murder and war; it is the 13th leading cause of death worldwide. As of 2011, 3000 people take their own lives every single day and for every person who takes their life, another twenty people will attempt to. That is shocking and unimaginable and by the time I’ve finished writing this sentence, two more lives will be lost somewhere in the world.

Most people don’t know that suicide is up there with other causes of death in the world and it isn’t recognised as much as cancer or heart diseases. Every suicide or suicide attempt can be 100% prevented if more and more people recognise it as another major problem in society.

The opening chapter of D.H Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s lover are powerful words and anyone with thoughts of suicide can relate to them:

The cataclysm has happened, we are among the ruins, we start to build up new little habitats, to have new little hopes. It is rather hard work: there is now no smooth road into the future: but we go round, or scramble over the obstacles. We’ve got to live, no matter how many skies have fallen.

Matthew 7:13-14 New International Version (NIV)The Narrow and Wide Gates

13 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.”14 “But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”
