Where did adventure go?!?!?

Looking for adventure anytime soon? Henry Rollins gives his opinion on how travel changes the way people see the world.

“I beg young people to travel. If you don’t have a passport, get one. Take a summer, get a backpack and go to Delhi, go to Saigon, go to Bangkok, go to Kenya. Have your mind blown. Eat interesting food. Dig some interesting people. Have an adventure. Be careful. Come back and you’re going to see your country differently, you’re going to see your president differently, no matter who it is. Music, culture, food, water. Your showers will become shorter. You’re going to get a sense of what globalization looks like. It’s not what Tom Friedman writes about; I’m sorry. You’re going to see that global climate change is very real. And that for some people, their day consists of walking 12 miles for four buckets of water. And so there are lessons that you can’t get out of a book that are waiting for you at the other end of that flight. A lot of people—Americans and Europeans—come back and go, ohhhhh. And the light bulb goes on.”

–Henry Rollins, “Punk Rock World Traveler,” World Hum, November 2, 2011

Words of truth by Rollins. I came across a comment on YouTube recently and this person said something that is true and we are mostly likely never going to experience or see it again. He said that about 200 years ago people had adventures such as sailing to the ends of the world looking for new riches. But now-a-days the most thrill and adventure that we get out of life is surfing through web giants such as Facebook, Google and YouTube. Even video games give you a sense of trill and adventure.

But the thrill and adventure that was good for you 200 odd years ago is some-what killing you and we know this killer as a lifestyle disease. Do you, once in a while, get that feeling of wanting to go somewhere when adventure awaits? I sure do—but when you start dreaming—start going places in your head, you get pulled back into the present. A world of fast-paced action with no time to have an adventure.

Don’t get me wrong! There are things that you could do in this modern world that would surely be an adventure. Take a look at sky diving, and the new crazed wing suit flying. Going to the shops could be an adventure, an adventure when you can’t get your new Ford to start (could be heart-breaking for some). Then you have some sort of adventure when you jump on a plane and head to a foreign destination. Yep…an adventure in the securities of a 5 star resort or hotel along a magnificent beach, which comes with the luxury of wi-fi and the internet.

Seriously, there’s probably +1000 locations in the world where you could take this video YOURSELF if you made an effort.

True adventure should be without the internet or video games. I could say technology but then you would have no way of capturing your adventure. If we experienced what people did 200 years or 100 years ago we would surely call it an adventure. Finally I’d like to ask you when was the last time you went to a village in the middle of a jungle or on an isolated island? When was the last time you visited a village being eroded by sandstorms? Hey, I might add the space adventure for the near future but right now nothing can beat what Earth has to offer. If you’ve never done anything like this before all I can say is:

The world is waiting right outside your door, what are waiting for! Come on here’s your chance are you ready for the ride of your life!

What if I said there was hidden treasure and gave you this map? Would you take up the offer for an adventure of a life time?
